Basic Technique

First, you need to have data in a format that can be opend by your program of choice. Lists of compatible file formats and programs are listed on companys' webpages

Second, the data will need to be imported into the mapping program, usually using the file menu.

Once the data has been imported, you can work with display properties to organize and import additional layers in a legend, usually located in a side menu bar.

Tools displayed as icons or in dropdown menus usually appear across the top of the screen to allow the user to display and manipulate data for the desired product. The type of software one is using determines the complexity and variety of tools offered.

The map is usually displayed in a main central screen where scale and size are at the users disposal. One can save the project and come back later to edit or print.
